چکیده

We re…ne a conjecture of M. O. Locks and J. M. Wilson [Reliability Engineering and System Safety 46 (1994), 283-286] regarding disjoint forms of the Abraham Reliability problem. We also present other examples of reliability problems with the interesting property that their minimal disjoint forms do not arise from the familiar tautologyM1+:::+Mn M1+(M2 M1)+(M3 M2 M1)+:::+(Mn Mn 1 ::: M1):

Setoids and universes

Setoids commonly take the place of sets when formalising mathematics inside type theory. In this note, the category of setoids is studied in type theory with as small universes as possible (and thus, the type theory as weak as possible). Particularly, we will consider epimorphisms and disjoint sums. It is shown that, given the minimal type universe, all epimorphisms are surjections, and disjoin...

Minimality and Symplectic Sums

Let X1, X2 be symplectic 4-manifolds containing symplectic surfaces F1, F2 of identical positive genus and opposite squares. Let Z denote the symplectic sum of X1 and X2 along the Fi. Using relative Gromov–Witten theory, we determine precisely when the symplectic 4-manifold Z is minimal (i.e., cannot be blown down); in particular, we prove that Z is minimal unless either: one of the Xi contains...

Preprocessing minpaths for sum of disjoint products

Network reliability algorithms which produce sums of disjoint products (SDP) are sensitive to the order in which the minimal pathsets are analyzed. The minpaths are preprocessed by choosing this order in the hope that an SDP algorithm will then provide a relatively efficient analysis. The most commonly used preprocessing strategy is to list the minpaths in order of increasing size. This paper g...

Sums and Products along Sparse Graphs

In their seminal paper from 1983, Erdős and Szemerédi showed that any n distinct integers induce either n distinct sums of pairs or that many distinct products, and conjectured a lower bound of n2−o(1). They further proposed a generalization of this problem, in which the sums and products are taken along the edges of a given graph G on n labeled vertices. They conjectured a version of the sum-p...

The Sums and Products of Commuting AC-Operators

Abstract: In this paper, we exhibit new conditions for the sum of two commuting AC-operators to be again an AC-operator. In particular, this is satisfied on Hilbert space when one of them is a scalar-type spectral operator.
